Science Fairs

Science fairs can be a valuable learning experience. Small schools may choose to join together with nearby Adventist schools (if available) to conduct the science fair. This is a good time to showcase Adventist schools to their church and school communities.

Parents or guardians may need guidance in remembering that their role is to support and supervise the completion of, and not to do, the project.

Tips include:

• Establish the criteria to be used for evaluating each project.
• Provide a student information packet with the following:
• Steps of the scientific method. Encourage active inquiry over simple reporting.
• Research guidelines.
• Display board guidelines that includes the problem, hypothesis, materials, procedures, abstract, data and results, conclusion, and summary.
• Deadline dates for the proposal and projects should be clearly communicated.
• The rubric that judges will use to evaluate each project.
• Decide where to have the science fair.
• Determine the type of ribbon or award students will receive.
• Give awards based on the projects' merits, not on how one project compares to other projects.
• Reference online resources for a variety of science fair ideas and resources.
