Professional Ethics

Adventist educators are expected to model the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and consistency. Students pay close attention to how their teachers live both inside and outside the classroom. When actions don't align with values, students may struggle to maintain respect for authority. Therefore, living with integrity is not only a personal responsibility but a vital part of effective teaching.

Simplicity: Avoid extremes. Biblical principles call us to place our focus on developing inner beauty (strength of character), not focusing on outward appearance (1 Peter 3:3-4). We want to glorify God in all aspects of life, including dress (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Practicality: Special consideration should be given to dressing appropriately for every occasion. For a small-school teacher this provides a considerable challenge and may even require a change of clothes during the school day.
Know your Community and Constituency: Appropriate professional dress norms may vary from community to community. It may be helpful to check with your local conference office of education about their dress standards and guidelines.

• Copyright Law: Educators should consistently give proper credit when using the creative work or ideas of others. Even when copyright guidelines feel complex, following them sends a clear message about respect and intellectual honesty.
• Public Safety Laws: When transporting students, teachers should model responsible behavior by wearing seatbelts, following speed limits, and avoiding distractions such as phone use while driving.
• Classroom Visitors: Professionalism should remain consistent regardless of who is present in the classroom. A steady, authentic approach fosters trust and confidence.
• Confidentiality: Teachers are entrusted with sensitive information and must handle it with discretion and care, maintaining the privacy and dignity of all individuals involved.
• Punctuality: Being on time for appointments and commitments reflects respect for others and a strong sense of personal responsibility.

By upholding these standards, educators strengthen their credibility, serve as role models, and contribute to a positive, principled learning environment.
